Prism Highlight Cards

Overview

Athletic teams needed quick, ready-to-use Prism content for their athletes, centered around the 'Just Tell Me What To Do' approach. However, with hundreds of athletes' Prisms to manage, time became a significant challenge.

Approach

My solution was to develop an Excel algorithm that efficiently processed raw JSON data and outputted the information into Adobe InDesign, saving countless hours of tedious work. The work we did on these Prism Cards eventually became the groundwork for our SurePeople Native Mobile App.

JSON to TSV

The data is pulled from a JSON file and converted into a TSV file for extraction. I ensured that each column of data was correctly aligned with a variable for the final product.

Logic and Functions

I used a series of Excel functions to cross-reference our 'threshold' for strong definition in each scale, which we set at a score of 70 or more. I then employed a LOOKUP function to reference a content matrix tied to that psychometric scale. The result was automatically populated in the correct column on the main tab, labeled with the corresponding scale.

InDesign and Data Merge

I initially designed the cards with actual content, then replaced the content with variables from the Excel sheet. By using the Data Merge function in InDesign, the content was automatically pulled from the Excel sheet and displayed on the cards. This process cycled through each row in the sheet, generating a new card for every row. This method was also used to determine the graphics you see here, with each graphic assigned a specific value based on the data.

The End Results

The result is a template CSV file that populates an InDesign file with unique content for each player in the team or organization. The process of running the data through the template CSV file to produce hundreds of cards now takes about 10 minutes.
